Ije Live is an immersive, participatory musical experience summarized by this saying “When we gather together in the moonlit village ground, it is not because of the moon. Every man can see it in his own compound. We come together because it is good for kinsmen to do so.” - Chinua Achebe

"Ije" is an Igbo-Nigerian word for 'Journey'. Ije Live started out as a simple idea to recreate a childhood community experience. A safe space for soulful, uplifting and refreshing musical experience. It features original music, storytelling and more wholesome expressions of Perpie's art. It has now grown into a 'Gathering'. Like last year, it features saxophone and vocal performance by Perpie accompanied by the orchestra and more.

The CJO Meets the Calgary Latin Orchestra

These two orchestras meet on one stage for a massively fun and energetic show. Join us for the music of Latin America, featuring musicians from the Calgary Jazz Orchestra and Calgary Latin Orchestra at this unique one-time event.

Three-time Grammy Award–winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis takes the spotlight in John Williams’ inventive Escapades, an ‘impressionistic memoir’ of 1960s progressive jazz, based on his music for the film Catch Me If You Can. Marsalis then joins the Calgary Phil for Maurice Ravel’s great orchestral crescendo, Boléro. This gripping program is led by Music Director Rune Bergmann and opens with Richard Strauss’ musical meditation on life, death, and the beyond.

Long before the Rings of Power, a dutch trombonist with little composing experience turned his love of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic into a large-scale work for winds.
​Johan de Miej's Symphony No.1 has gone on to be a blockbuster regularly performed all around the world. Alberta Winds conductor Gareth Jones has an affinity with de Meij's work so this will be a performance not to be missed.

The Music of Louis Armstrong & Premiere of Stamp Collector Suite

Johnny Summers and the Calgary Jazz Orchestra pay homage to one of the early creators of jazz and one of the most significant voices in the genre’s development through the ages (not to mention one of our heroes!) – Louis Armstrong.

“Stamp Collector” is an eight-movement suite commissioned by and featuring Darcy Stamp on violin, composed for violin and jazz orchestra by Johnny Summers. The work explores the range of the violin as a jazz solo instrument.
